約４年前、米カリフォルニア州パロアルトのカフェ「クパ・カフェ」はビットコインの支払いを受け入れ始めた。ビットコインの価値が100ドル（約１万1280円）前後から1000ドル超に跳ね上がる最初のブームの少し前のことだ。共同経営者カメリア・クパル氏によると、当時ビットコインで支払いをする顧客は週に２−３人。現在はどうかというと、２−３人で変わらないという。
ビットコインは過去１年で投機家に大金をもたらしたが、決済手段としてはあまり使われていない。インフレで現地通貨の価値がビットコイン以上に変動するベネズエラのような国を除けば、オンラインショップによる使用は減少し実質ゼロだと、モルガン・スタンレーは分析する。クパ・カフェなどがビットコインの支払いを受け入れ始めた際、ビットコインがいずれ通常通貨に換わる存在になるとの主張も聞かれたが、そんな声も聞かれなくなった。
コロンビア・ビジネス・スクールのジャイコブ・レシュノ准教授は「ビットコインには取引に役立つ手段としての価値が含まれている。その部分を除けば、バブルだけが残る」と話した。
2017年にビットコインの価値は1000ドル前後から１万9000ドル超まで上昇、しばしば激しい値動きを記録した。人気の高まりで取引ネットワークの動きは鈍くなり、手数料は跳ね上がった。同年12月下旬には、ビットコインを売ろうとすれば、取引成立に数時間はおろか数日待つか、平均55ドルの手数料を支払うかの選択を迫られた。これでは１杯３ドルのコーヒー代をビットコインで払うというのは実質不可能だ。ちなみに16年半ばの手数料は15セント前後だった。
「誰もビットコインを使わない」と語るのは仮想通貨取引所エトロのマネジングディレクター、イクバル・ガンダム氏だ。「これまでで最も高いピザ代支払いになりかねない」と付け加えた。
