【仮想通貨】仮想通貨リップル創業者「資産4.2兆円」で米国15位の富豪に

仮想通貨の時価総額は2017年に急上昇を遂げ、総額6000億ドルを突破。多数の仮想通貨長者を誕生させている。仮想通貨のなかでもビットコインの時価総額は1月2日時点で2370億ドルに達している。
そんな中、注目を浴びているのがサンフランシスコ本拠のリップルの前CEOと現在のCEOらだ。リップルはXRPと呼ばれるトークンを発行し、1月1日時点でその価値は2.39ドル。時価総額は889億ドル（約10兆円）に達した。リップルはその前週に時価総額でイーサリアムを抜き、2番目に時価総額の高い仮想通貨となった。
リップルの共同創業者で元CEOのクリス・ラーセンは、2016年11月から同社の会長を務めているが、51億9000万 XRPを保有し、17％のリップルの株式を保有している。1月1日時点のラーセンの資産総額は373億ドル（約4.2兆円）と推定できる。
ラーセンの資産総額は2017年のフォーブスの米国富豪リスト「フォーブス400」で15位の元マイクロソフトCEOのスティーブ・バルマーと並んだことになる。
また、リップルの現在のCEOのブラッド・ガーリングハウスは同社株の6.3%を保有し、自身でXRPも保有している。ガーリングハウスの資産総額も少なくとも95億ドルに達している。ガーリングハウスはフォーブス400で54位に入ることになる。
XRPの値上がりで3番目に資産を増やした人物が、もう一人の共同創業者で2013年にリップルを去ったJed McCalebだ。McCalebは20億XRPを寄付のために手放したと述べているが、2016年2月時点で53億XRPをリップルの管轄下で保有している。McCalebが一日に放出可能なXRPには制限が設けられているが、仮に全XRPを放出したとしたら、ビリオネアになることは確実だ。
リップルはアメリカンエキスプレスやスペインのサンタンデール銀行など、100社以上の企業を顧客に持っている。リップルが他の仮想通貨と異なるのは、分散度が低い点だ。リップルは自社で613億XRPを保有し、供給の確実性を生み出すために550億はエスクロー凍結を実施しており、毎月10億XRPずつ解放される。これまでの発行数は387億XRPとなっている。
一方でビットコインの場合は初期のメンバーらが大量のコインを保有している。ナカモト・サトシと呼ばれる謎の人物は、推定で98万ビットコイン（1月1日時点のレートで134億ドル）を持っているとされている。これはビットコインの全流通量の5.8%に相当する。
ただし、リップルにしろビットコインにしろ、あらゆる仮想通貨は値動きが激しく、フォーブスが今年3月に新たな「フォーブス400」を発表する際に、リップルの創業者らがそこに並ぶ保証はない。
