Nate Silver@NateSilver538・14時間 Little bit of old bread-and-butter polling analysis for you this afternoon. Biden appears to have gained 1 or 2 points in post-debate polls.
During his 2016 campaign, the president made revitalizing the coal industry a large part of his populist appeal in the all-important Rust Belt, even though coal has been displaced by natural gas in recent years with Foreign Policy reporting, “Natural gas is today the biggest single source of fuel for America’s power plants.”
Nonetheless, the president pushed coal (“Trump digs coal”) while claiming, “We’re going to put our miners back to work.”
As the Times notes, the president opened the doors to coal industry insiders to join his administration, reporting, “Despite Mr. Trump stocking his administration with coal-industry executives and lobbyists, taking big donations from the industry, rolling back environmental regulations and intervening directly in cases like the Arizona power plant and mine, coal’s decline has only accelerated in recent years.”
That failure has not gone unnoticed by the workers who voted for Trump. “Arizona is now an electoral battleground for Mr. Trump. But the economic trauma from coal’s rapid collapse extends to Kentucky and other coal-mining states. After the shutdown of coal-fueled power producers like the Paradise Fossil Plant in western Kentucky, the Genesis Mine in Centertown, Ky., laid off its 250 workers in late February.” 0750日出づる処の名無し2020/10/06(火) 21:57:51.85ID:X6dW6IUo The Pressure to Be Perfect Turns Deadly for Celebrities in Japan- A succession of suicides has shown the burdens of a society where many feel that they must conceal their personal struggles.・・・ https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/05/world/asia/japan-suicide-celebrities.html

West Long Branch, NJ ? Joe Biden holds a 12-point lead over Donald Trump among all registered voters in Pennsylvania and anywhere from an 8-point to 11-point lead among likely voters, according to the Monmouth (“Mon-muth”) University Poll.
This marks an improvement from Biden’s single-digit lead in a Monmouth poll just over one month ago. More voters trust the challenger than the incumbent on key issues, such as handling the pandemic. The poll does not find much shift in opinion since the president’s own Covid-19 diagnosis. Other findings show a Democratic advantage in a trio of statewide office races and a tight margin in the generic party preference for Congress.
Among all registered voters in Pennsylvania, the race for president stands at 54% for Biden and 42% for Trump. Another 1% support Libertarian Jo Jorgensen and 2% are undecided. Biden maintains a sizable lead when likely voter models are applied. A model based on a somewhat higher level of turnout than 2016 puts the race at 54% for Biden and 43% for Trump, while one reflecting lower turnout has it at 53% for Biden and 45% for Trump.
The results show a wider gap than Monmouth’s poll one month ago, when Biden held a 49% to 45% lead among registered voters. The current race standing is more in line with Monmouth’s July poll, which had it at 53% Biden to 40% Trump. 0755日出づる処の名無し2020/10/07(水) 04:09:01.97ID:/rUgC1n+ Nate Silver@NateSilver538・3時間 Biden now up 6.6 in our Pennsylvania polling average. China’s support for the Black Lives Matter movement seems opportunistic, given its own poor record on human rights. But throughout the early to mid-20th century, China’s leaders and Black activists did find common ca use on the issue of racism. They collaborated to challenge global racism , drawing on their shared experiences and histories. Their solidarity re presented one thread in a global tapestry of anti-racist activism ? an e laborate network that joined Black Americans at home to the struggle of colonial subjects abroad. That history of Black internationalism, and it s arrival in China, is what Communist leaders seek to exploit today. It serves as a stark reminder of a timeless truth: that the United States’ racial legacy is as much a form of diplomacy as it is an arm of domestic politics.
Among all the 1,003 registered, likely voters in the nationwide Franklin Pierce -Herald poll, Biden now holds a 51%-37% lead over Trump less than a month before Election Day. Three percent support a third party candidate while 8% say they are still undecided.
Biden is holding a 12-point lead among independent voters ? a key to the election in battleground states. The former vice president also holds a massive 58%-31% lead among women voters. Male voters are evenly split between Trump and Biden, the poll shows.
The poll shows in stark numbers just how much COVID-19 has impacted the election. Just three in 10 voters said they plan to vote in person on Nov. 3, while 43% said they planned to mail ballots in or vote by absentee ballot. One quarter of voters said they plan to vote early in person. 0777日出づる処の名無し2020/10/07(水) 13:27:25.67ID:/rUgC1n+https://www.politico.com/news/2020/10/06/fauci-covid-deaths-426977 Fauci: There could be 300,000 to 400,000 Covid deaths unless precautions taken He added that a vaccine likely won’t be widely available until next summer or fall. アメリカ国立アレルギー・感染症研究所所長のファウチ氏:ワクチンが広範に利用可能 になるのは来年の夏か秋以降なので、新コロナウイルス対策を続けなければ30〜40万人 の死者が出ることが有りえる

More than 200,000 people have died from the disease in the United States, and over 7 million have been diagnosed with it. A University of Washington study found in August that as many as 300,000 people could die of the disease by Dec. 1.
Fauci added that a vaccine likely won't be widely available until next summer or fall. Nate Silver@NateSilver538 ・ 1時間 Our current polling averages in the most likely tipping-point states:
Why has the United States handled this pandemic so badly? We have failed at almost every step. We had ample warning, but when the disease first arrived, we were incapable of testing effectively and couldn’t provide even the most basic personal protective equipment to health care workers and the general public.
And we continue to be way behind the curve in testing. While the absolute numbers of tests have increased substantially, the more useful metric is the number of tests performed per infected person, a rate that puts us far down the international list, below such places as Kazakhstan, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia, countries that cannot boast the biomedical infrastructure or the manufacturing capacity that we have.2 Moreover, a lack of emphasis on developing capacity has meant that U.S. test results are often long delayed, rendering the results useless for disease control.
The response of our nation’s leaders has been consistently inadequate. The federal government has largely abandoned disease control to the states. Governors have varied in their responses, not so much by party as by competence. But whatever their competence, governors do not have the tools that Washington controls. Instead of using those tools, the federal government has undermined them. 0804日出づる処の名無し2020/10/08(木) 07:16:53.29ID:QW+5Al4c The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which was the world’s leading disease response organization, has been eviscerated and has suffered dramatic testing and policy failures. The National Institutes of Health have played a key role in vaccine development but have been excluded from much crucial government decision making. And the Food and Drug Administration has been shamefully politicized,3 appearing to respond to pressure from the administration rather than scientific evidence.
Our current leaders have undercut trust in science and in government,4 causing damage that will certainly outlast them. Instead of relying on expertise, the administration has turned to uninformed “opinion leaders” and charlatans who obscure the truth and facilitate the promulgation of outright lies.
Anyone else who recklessly squandered lives and money in this way would be suffering legal consequences. Our leaders have largely claimed immunity for their actions. But this election gives us the power to render judgment. Reasonable people will certainly disagree about the many political positions taken by candidates.
But truth is neither liberal nor conservative. When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent.
