WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumer prices fell by the most in more than five years in March and further decreases are likely as the novel coronavirus outbreak suppresses demand for some goods and services, offsetting price increases related to shortages resulting from disruptions to the supply chain.
The Labor Department said on Friday its consumer price index dropped 0.4% last month amid a tumble in the cost of gasoline, and record decreases in hotel accommodation, apparel and airline ticket prices. That was the biggest drop since January 2015 and followed a 0.1% gain in February. In the 12 months through March, the CPI increased 1.5%, the smallest advance since February 2019, after accelerating 2.3% in February.
The Justice Department is urging federal prosecutors across the country to focus on investigating and bringing cases related to Chinese efforts to steal American intellectual property.
John Demers, the DOJ’s assistant attorney general for national security, said the DOJ is looking for all 94 U.S. attorneys to bring cases related to the so-called China Initiative, which began in 2018 under then-attorney general Jeff Sessions.
- In January, the Justice Department charged China’s largest smartphone maker, Huawei Technologies Co., an $8.4 billion firm protected by China’s Communist party, with a laundry list of crimes including conspiracy, money laundering, bank and wire fraud, flouting U.S. sanctions on Iran, and obstruction of justice. The Coronavirus Outbreak Keeps Humans from Touching. April 11, 2020, 5:07 AM JST / Updated April 11, 2020, 7:33 AM JST By Suzy Khimm, Laura Strickler, Andrew Blankstein and Peter Georgiev Nearly 2,500 long-term care facilities in 36 states are battling coronavirus cases, according to data gathered by NBC News from state agencies, an explosive increase of 522 percent compared to a federal tally just 10 days ago.
The total dwarfs the last federal estimate on March 30 ? based on “informal outreach” to state health departments ? that more than 400 nursing homes had at least one case of the virus.
The full scale of the virus’ impact is even greater than NBC News’ tally, as key states including Florida did not provide data, and nursing homes across the United States are still struggling for access to testing.
The toll of these outbreaks is growing. NBC News tallied 2,246 deaths associated with long-term care facilities, based on responses from 24 states. This, too, is an undercount; about half of all states said they could not provide data on nursing home deaths, or declined to do so. Some states said they do not track these deaths at all.

The new coronavirus has hit more than 2,100 nursing homes and other senior facilities around the U.S., killing over 2,300 people, according to a survey by The Wall Street Journal, an indication the pandemic’s toll in these facilities has been greater than the federal government has reported.
Nursing homes and other senior-living facilities in the U.S. have reported at least 15,473 coronavirus cases, according to data collected from 37 states that responded to requests from the Journal, which contacted all 50 health departments.

The breakdown involved people in the Army, the Navy, the White House.
“Those who made errors of judgement were unpunished, and they carried out their duties throughout the war. Many of these men had superb records in combat.”
“Meanwhile, the broken intelligence system was corrected and rebuilt during the war. This allowed America to prevail two or three years earlier than had been forecast in 1942.”
Lee concludes by saying: “The lesson for today is that instead of looking for people to blame for mishandling the disaster, stay positive, fix the problems at hand and win this war.”
His point, and mine, is not that we shouldn’t find out what went wrong in the early days of the pandemic. Eventually, we must. But we don’t have the luxury of doing it competently and fairly while the battle for lives still rages.
・・・Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson received more than 4 million votes as the Libertarian Party presidential candidate in 2016. Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, a Republican with libertarian views, briefly delayed last month’s stimulus bill on constitutional grounds by insisting on an in-person quorum even as his colleagues worried about catching the virus.
More recently, he tweeted: “When Pearl Harbor was attacked, did we pass a bailout or did we declare war on our enemy? Attack the virus not the taxpayers.”・・・ https://apnews.com/cfcdd563167c5ba60aa0e9011f4446cd
