新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大が懸念される今、人混みで咳をしようものなら一斉に白い目で見られること間違いなしだが、ここはアメリカ西海岸の沖合に位置する深海だ。
海の生きものの「くしゃみ」の撮影に成功したのは、カリフォルニア州の海洋センター「モントレー湾水族館研究所（MBARI）」の深海探査チームだ。
ガラススポンジ
アマンダ・カーン博士研究員（ポスドク）らのチームは2013年から2015年にかけて、西海岸から220キロ離れた太平洋の深さ4000メートルの海底に生息するイソギンチャクと海綿動物9種類の観測を実施。
無人探査機が撮影した深海の動画を分析中、フタナシホッスガイが少しずつ体を膨らませていることに気づいた！その直後、くしゃみする人間が顔を背けるように、隣のイソギンチャクに勢い良く水を吐きかけたという。海綿動物は体液を全部吐き出したあと、急速に収縮し、元のサイズの体に戻ったという。
フタナシホッスガイは別名「ガラススポンジ」、日本語では「六放海綿網」と呼ばれている。その名のとおり、骨格がガラスの原料であるシリカ（二酸化ケイ素）でできていて、コップのような形をしている。
研究チームによると、淡水に生息する海綿動物であれば、体に水を取り入れて濾過させることで、栄養素を吸収しているようすは見たことがあるが、深海では初めて目にする姿だったという。
これまでの研究で淡水に生きる海綿動物では1度のくしゃみ（膨張→収縮）を終えるまで約40分近くかかることがわかっているが、深海では更に長く、数時間から、時として数週間かけて伸び縮みしていたという。
アマンダ・カーン氏は「深海には陸上では想像できないほどのダイナミックな世界が広がっていますが、時間の流れもダイナミックなスケールで進みます」と話している。
