通称グアテマラは、中央アメリカ北部に位置する共和制国家である。
気候は基本的に亜熱帯型である。
メキシコとの国境付近に国内かつ中米最高峰であるタフムルコ山（4,220m）、タカナ山など4000メートルを超える火山もある。
