米軍はロシアの最新鋭極超音速ミサイルシステム「アバンガルド」から国土を防衛可能な兵器を有していない。米誌ナショナル・インタレストがジョン・ハイテン米戦略軍司令官の話を伝えた。
「私たちに対するこのような兵器の攻撃を撃退可能な防御手段はない」とハイテン氏は認めた。アバンガルドは１２月２６日、実験を成功させた。
アバンガルドは時速３万キロまで加速し、３０分以内に地球の赤道を一周できる。標的に向かうアバンガルドは上下左右へと複雑な機動を行う。この速度と機動性から現代の対空システムやミサイル防衛（ＭＤ）システムでは迎撃が難しい。
「核を搭載可能なアバンガルドシステムのように壊滅的な性能を持つ兵器に関しては、比較的楽観的な迎撃率でさえ、５０％は依然受け入れられないリスクをもたらすだろう」とハイテン氏は認めた。
